I've given much thought to that question, as many have I'm sure. Most will be influenced by the bias they have for their favorite era. That being said, and since I like all eras except the Vince years, I would say Jerry was at his best between August 1980 and December 1981. Now I'm not saying these were the Dead's best years, but from a technical point of view (and as a guitar player myself) I believe Jerry was at his peak musically at that time.

Without regard to skill level,era or any other considerations I think 72' was his high point.If you listen to the Nov./Dec. versions of Playin',Dark Star and the Other One,his playing and execution are just extraordinary.
